HK's Lawmakers In Bid For Change

Hundreds of pro-democracy supporters turned out in Hong Kong's Central district this week, following the staged resignation of a group of legislators. The government has played down the significance of the move, while a stalemate looks to be the likely result.

The political system in Hong Kong has, in the words of the New York Times, "grown increasingly paralyzed" as many have become dissatisfied with the lack of democracy in the former British colony.

Five legislators in Hong Kong resigned their seats earlier this week, in the hope that the resulting by-election would be seen as a de facto referendum on universal suffrage. Democrats want full direct elections by 2012 – instead of 2017, the timetable set by Beijing.

China has become a hot spot for expats. As much of the world struggled during the recent economic downturn, China continued to develop, seeing increasing economic growth-- a draw for many foreigners.
Some come to China for the adventure, others for an economic opportunity, and others see it as a place to meet women, but should they come for preferential policies?

With its over 1.3 billion people, almost one fifth of humanity, China has had to take stringent measures to deal with its population explosion. For the past three decades, China's one-child policy has effectively prevented four hundred million births, a number greater than the entire U.S. population. In many ways, the policy seems to have worked: With fewer mouths to feed, poverty has fallen, living standards have improved dramatically, and China has become an economic power to be reckoned with. However, as a result of the one-child policy, China faces new problems: a looming demographic disaster as the population ages, social and psychological problems of the only-child generation, and criticism from overseas concerning human rights violations. After 30 years' of implementation, the government-established deadline for the policy is just around the corner, and a fierce debate rages over whether to keep the policy in place, or to abolish it.
