With their possessions in a canvas sac and children often left to be raised by their aging parents, more than 150 million Chinese workers trek long distances across the country in search of a job. Americans rely on these workers to make their cellphones, t-shirts and computers. The Chinese elite rely on them to build the high-rises they work in, serve their dinners or clean their floors. How do these migrant workers contribute to China's economy? What can be done to improve their lives?

China's known as 'the factory of the world', partly because its low wage economy is attractive to manufacturers.

But as the country's wealth grows, so do the demands of its workers.

Andrew Livingstone reports on one province attempting to placate its low wage earners by regulating wage agreements with workers and their companies.
Honda Strike Legality

As you may remember, we reported recently on a strike by Honda workers in the South of China. The issue seemed to have been settled a few days ago when it was announced workers and management had reached an agreement over pay, but now there’s a new twist. Was the action even legal? Matt Schrader takes a closer look.
Expert View: Suicides and Strikes

As spring has turned to summer here in China, problems between workers and management at multinational corporations in the south of the country have started to heat up.

First a string of suicides at their factories brought Foxconn, the country's largest contract electronics manufacturer, to its knees.

Then a strike by workers at a Honda transmission assembly plant brought work at all four of the company's factories in China to a halt.

To try to get a sense of what these incidents mean and where things may be heading, we have on the line Geoffrey Crothall from the Hong Kong-based NGO China Labour Bulletin, which seeks to defend and promote the rights of workers in China.
