Traditional economic theory holds that China's large trade surplus with the rest of the world is good for the country, but bad for its trading partners.
But now with that surplus falling, one Chinese professor says that's actually good for the country.
As reported earlier this month by BON, trade and investment between China and Africa has been increasing at a fever pace in recent years. BON reporter Zach Reff went to the recent 2009 China-Africa Industrial Cooperation and Development Forum in Beijing to examine the increasing connections between China and the African continent.
Chinese investments in African oil, gas, and mineral resources have made headlines in western newspapers and trade publications over the past couple years. But the Chinese government is also stepping up efforts to promote cultural, educational and other kinds of exchange on the African continent – much as the US has done with its Peace Corps volunteers for decades. Organizers of the Shanghai Expo have been left sweating over visitor numbers, which so far have been lower than expected. But there are no such concerns at the Expo's Joint Africa pavilion. It has recorded the highest number of visitors of any pavilion, to the surprise of some observers. BON's Tom Spender has more.
