China is no stranger to food safety scares but the latest case of dodgy products has grabbed more attention than most. That's because it involves American soft drink giant Coca-Cola.

The company is assisting the Chinese police in an investigation into two cases of alleged mercury poisoning in customers who drank cans of the company's Sprite lemonade.

The two incidents, which took place three months apart in Beijing, have received high-profile coverage in local media.

The company issued a statement ruling out contamination at its Beijing bottling plant, adding that it believed a third party had "maliciously" added the mercury after the canning process.

Although the Chinese are avid recyclers with newspaper, aluminum and plastic, the Coca-cola China operations will bring in the new plant bottle that incorporates plant waste instead of petroleum in making the container. Soon, the Chinese will enjoy Fanta, Sprite and Coke products in what is called the plant bottle.

China has become extremely sensitive about food safety. So when the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine tested some baby food supplements and found them to have a slightly high level of mercury, they made call to pull them off the shelves. The food recall was not all that was reported to be pulled, there was yet another milk powder found to be substandard. As to the baby foods, the amount of mercury was tested to have an average of 0.03 micrograms per kilogram of mercury and the safety level standard is 0.02 micrograms per kilogram. Experts say there are no health risks associated with level of mercury.

Following its donation of 2.4 million bottles of water to the Lushan Earthquake relief efforts on April 20, the Coca-Cola China System on April 21 announced the donation of 8 million yuan to the China Women's Development Foundation, an amount equal to 1.29 million US. This brings the total monetary value of the Coca-Cola System's donation to the Lushan disaster area in Sichuan up to 1.68 million dollars. Coca-Cola is utilizing the same charitable avenue as PepsiCo in helping the earthquake victims.
