China's Mini Chess Champs

Jun 19, 2010
In the streets of China, it's common to see old men playing Go and Chinese chess at street-side tables as crowds of onlookers gather. But in one city in China this week, hundreds of children turned the tables and put their minds to the test.

This week, schools and companies across China closed for three days to see the annual dragon boat festival. But in Xiamen city, instead of relaxing, hundreds of children gathered to try their hands at competitive chess.

The "Star of Hope Cup" tournament saw more than 200 pint-sized chess prodigies battling it out to check mate each other. The tournament is Xiamen's largest children's chess tournament ever.
