China is both the world's fastest growing economy and the world's leading polluter.  As a result, the country faces the twin challenges of reducing its carbon emissions while at the same time providing more power for its people's growing energy demands.

For years, China has relied heavily on dirty coal to provide much of this energy, but as Andrew Livingstone reports, moves are underway to improve efficiency in coal fired stations.

Well while coal power is for the most part the dirtiest way to generate electricity, using the natural power of water flowing downhill is seen as a better alternative.

But as Andrew Livingstone reports, this supposedly clean alternative is having serious environmental impacts of its own in China.

Since last year's Copenhagen Accord failed to set binding agreements on carbon emissions, countries have been playing the blame game, with the US and China prime targets. Now a Chinese government report is recommending that China takes a huge step towards reducing its carbon output. Andrew Livingstone has the details.
